Building Successful Backlinks
Let’s start with the most important questions; What are backlinks and why are backlinks important to SEO?
A backlink occurs whenever another website has a direct link back to your website. This is important to SEO because backlinks are a crucial element of Google’s ranking algorithm. In a sense, backlinks act as Google’s website referral system. Each backlink from another website to yours acts as a referral to Google that your website is trustworthy and legitimate. When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. When someone links to you, they are often recommending your website or your content to their audience. The thing is, when it comes to backlinks, quality is much more important than quantity. It’s similar to receiving a professional referral for a job interview. A single referral from Bill Gates is probably going to hold a lot more esteem than 30 referrals from your friends. Keeping this example in mind, a backlink from a website that is considered trustworthy and has a high trust score is going to hold much more weight if they link back to you than a bunch of shady backlinks that you bought off of fiverr.com (and for the record, receiving bad backlinks can actually knock down your trust score rather than raise it). As you begin to receive backlinks to your site, Google will compile them, analyze them, and then assign you a “Trust Score”. As the name implies, this trust score is what Google uses to determine how “legitimate” your site is. So, if you backlink to another website, your trust score will tell Google how much weight to assign to your backlink.
